Harpaz, Beth J., Are we raising a generation of nincompoops? Topeka Capital Journal. Topeka Kansas. Sept. 28, 2010. P. 6.

Article summary

The article chosen describes how the younger generation is becoming inept at common tasks that we do in everyday circumstances, even the title suggests it, “Are we raising a generation of nincompoops?” Predominately, the older generation, usually baby boomers, often take kids for granted. However, for the most part, the youth is adept at use of technology that is “digital,” in nature to those from past generation. Ultimately, in a healthy society, there is supposed to be a natural tension between the older and younger generations. It is how society has been brought up. It is up to the adult to remind the kid that, “The world didn’t begin on their 13th birthday!” And it’s good for kids to begrudge adults and fight back. Parents want to be critical and hassle them. This is considered beneficial in a well functioning society, but it not considered constructive to be passive and let “kids be kids because they grow up”.
