Action:

Depresses the CNS, by potentiating GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter.

Produces skeletal muscle relaxation by inhibiting spinal polysynaptic afferent pathways.

Has anticonvulsant properties due to enhanced presynaptic inhibition.

Therapeutic Uses

Relief of anxiety, sedation, amnesia, skeletal muscle relaxation,

decreased seizure activity.

Contraindications

Monitor BP, pulse, and respiratory rate.

Assess IV site; diazepam may cause

phlebitis and venous thrombosis.

Assess mental status, level of sedation,

seizures, muscle spasms, and patients

experiencing alcohol withdrawal.

Evaluate hepatic and renal function and

CBC periodically during prolonged therapy.

Hypersensitivity, cross-sensitivity with other benzodiazepines,

comatose patients, severe pulmonary impairment, sleep apnea, severe

hepatic dysfunction, pre-existing CNS depression, angle-closure

glaucoma, uncontrolled severe pain, & myasthenia gravis.

Client Education

Respiratory depression, dizziness, drowsiness, lethargy,

depression, slurred speech, blurred vision, constipation,

diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rashes, physical dependence, &

tolerance.

Medication/Food Interactions

Tablets may be crushed and taken with food or water if patient

has difficulty swallowing.

Medication Administration

PO, IM, IV, Rect.

Take medication as directed and do not take more than

prescribed or increase dose if less effective after...
