1. In addition to a paid job, where else might a person develop managerial experience?

• School: This can be done by holding various leadership positions by joining clubs, sports etc and getting leadership positions within these communities

• In the community: Volunteer work is a great way to gain leadership experience. This can be through coaching disadvantaged children, volunteering in medical fields or participating in various community projects like the fire station.

• Parenting: As parents we manage various aspects of our child’s lives including what they eat, who they socialize with and their education.

2. In recent years, many employers seek out technically trained job candidates who also have studied management. What advantages do you think employers see in a technical person studying management?

• Technically trained people will find it easy to motivate employees since they have hands on experience of the task at hand and can relate to the employees on a direct level

• Technically trained managers are also better equipped to ensure the end product is a quality product since they are well versed with the product itself. This enables them to individually check the quality instead of always having to outsource quality checks. This saves the company both money and ensures the product is of top quality

• Employees are also more likely to trust a manager who is technically trained since they understand the product better. (Massey & Kyriazis, 2014).

3. Why do large companies encourage many of their employees to “think like entrepreneurs”?

• Large companies teach their employees to think like entrepreneurs to ensure they remain innovative and can come up with product improvements to stay ahead of the competition. For a company to stay afloat, their products have to keep improving as stagnation results in obsolete products. Managers who are innovative will ensure the company stays profitable (Thornberry, 2003).
