1.0. Introduction

This chapter gives the back ground study area, objectives of the research, limitation, research methodology, research questions, and scope of the study and importance of the study.

1.0.1. Background

This research paper is about maintenance and repair of equipments-machinery in Central Equatoria State. It is focused on maintenance and repair at organization level- factories; companies dealing with machineries, organizations, workshops, power stations, industries etc, whose productivity are dependent on machine use and individual level.

Based on observation in the streets of Juba town and interviews with production companies, about 75-80% of equipment/machine down time in Central Equatoria State at organization and individual level is stemmed to ignorance of maintenance managements systems and repair significance, lack of technical personnel in the department, safety related problems, environmental problems, negative attitude of people towards the department, lack of spare Parts, poor roads construction, bad roads . This has resulted to increased equipment cost and production costs.

From this point of view the researchers need to bring forward to the notice of equipment users that output of equipment is directly dependant on its upkeep through proper maintenance and repair to minimize machine down time resulting from breakdown /failures and maximize equipment availability, safety of operating personnel, maintenance personnel to achieve set goals for production.

Also machine users should know that equipment/ system once designed is bound to fail in due course of operation, this failure can be delayed or even avoided through regular inspection and hence maintenance of the equipment.
