Change is a difficult process to deal with for both managers and individuals within an organization because it is something unknown. Managers must be willing to take-on multiple roles and adapt to different situations in order to make change happen successfully. Individuals on the other hand must be willing to accept and embrace change even when it feels foreign and unknown. A manager has the ability to guide individuals during the change process so it becomes an easy transition. The Southern California Gas Company is going through a retirement phase of Lead Construction Technicians (LCT) with the baby boomer generation and changing into the younger generation who are filling those vacancies.

Assess the various roles of managers and individuals in the change process

During the change of personnel phase at the Southern California Gas Company, management has had to take on various roles to have a smooth transition. Management’s role is of director because management is aware that through proper training of the younger employees the ability to perform their duties will be achieved. A lot of training is provided to the younger employees who have limited field experience to better prepare them for the situations they may encounter in the field as new LCT’s. Emphasis is placed on policies and procedures when unsure of other methods to ensure success in a particular situation. For example, an LCT needs to drill a hole in a distribution gas pipe but is not too sure about all the steps involved. The LCT has the ability to look at the policies and procedures in which they were trained to look for that particular method.
