While keeping a record of my media consumption during these last two days, I have found that immediate accessibility has been the quality I favor when seeking information. During these past two days I have surfed the Internet, and have read Canadian Living and Reader’s Digest. Each of these types of media offers a variety of topics ranging from Entertainment to the Stock Market.

With one exception, “Married to Rock”, I must admit I have not watched television during these past two days. I have spent a total of about three hours per day on the Internet and reading magazines. I have spent time watching and reading about a variety of topics, from entertainment, news and public affairs, to the stock market. It’s tough to tell how much time I devoted to each topic, as one article or program may spark my interest to look up information on another subject, although I would initially inquire about entertainment topics. For instance, a FrontPage headline on Mark Zuckerberg’s success with Facebook prompted me to research the value of shares for Facebook and other successful Internet giants such as Google or Yahoo.

Another good example occurred on Sunday while on Twitter; I read a post condemning fashion icon Michael Kors for a comment he made on Twitter, which sparked my curiosity to find Kors’ comment. In his tweet, Kors stated that the reason for the chaos in Cairo was because ‘they had all heard about his new spring collection line’. This then prompted me to check up on the Cairo situation.

Much of the media I accessed was from U.S sources, roughly fifty percent. Canadian sources contributed for about forty five percent, with the Al Jazeera website contributing five percent.

Just as I am prompted by one topic to look up another, I can also be prompted, by one form of media, to use another. It’s always a FrontPage headline on a newspaper or webpage that grabs my attention. The Winnipeg Free Press is interesting because it generally features local news...
