Define Bureaucracy.

: Bureaucracy is a system of administration distinguished by its (1) clear hierarchy of authority, (2) rigid division of labor, (3) written and inflexible rules, regulations, and procedures, and (4) impersonal relationships. Once instituted, bureaucracies are difficult to dislodge or change. See also Parkinson's Law and Peter Principle.

2. What are the five principal administrative structures at the national government level?

* Cabinet-level departments

* Independent regulatory boards and commissions

* Government corporations

* Divisions of the Executive office of the President

* Other miscellaneous agencies

3. Describe Politics-administration dichotomy.

: The politics-administration dichotomy is a particular conceptualization of politics-administration relationship resting on the assumption that each function works best as an independent variable, and capable of being improved in isolation without endangering or interfering with the other side.

4. Compare and contrast the state vs Federal Bureaucracies.

: The states typically have numerous cabinet level departments and also have a wide variety of regulatory bodies, some government corporations, and miscellaneous agencies. The federal government delegates to the states both legislative and administrative power to state governments. Furthermore, federal government mandates that state public agencies carry out federal programs. This gives the power to the state elected officials.

5. Analyze why there has been so much growth in Bureaucracy in recent years.
