Introduction
Daniel Carlson
Biology Lab
In a laboratory it is important to use the scientific methods. After a hypothesis has
been created, it is time to test the prediction. If the results of the experiments are
plausible, the hypothesis is then adapted to connect with the experiment.
The objectives of this lab are to focus on cell replication.. In Section I, the “Health
and Safety Review” section will give you guidelines to avoid any accidents in the lab
and specify what a student can do to if an accident does occur. In Section II,
“Measurements”, students will become comfortable with the metric measurements., In
Section II, there are other activities about length that will require you to measure a piece
of rope. You will also learn about the different parts of a scientific research report when
viewing Section III. In Section IV “Compound Light Microscopy”, you will use a
microscope. In Section IV you will come across different sub-sections, such as the first
activity which is “Safe handling of the microscope” where you will use a light microscope
and explore its different features. This eventually leads to the activity where you will
make observations with the compound light microscope, in activity 4 you will determine
the actual size of specimens using a microscope.
Materials for Section I: Health and Safety
-
Safety: Observation & Measurements packet, shower and eyewash
station, fire extinguishers, first aid kit, closed toed shoes, lab coat, and safety goggles.
Materials for Section II: Metric Measurements
-
Activity 1 (Length): Lab coat, safety goggles, ruler, and a piece of rope.
-
Activity 2 (Weight is a measure of the mass of an object under
gravitational pull): Lab coat, different objects to weigh, safety goggles, and a loading
scale.
-
Activity 3 (Volume is a measure of the material): Graduated cylinder, lab
coat, safety goggles, 100ml of water, and loading scale.
Materials for Section III: The...
