In “Can a Corporation Have a Conscience”, the authors mention a “feature” that permits them to trust them more being a more morally responsible person. In the context of this, I came across that they were alluding to respect as the feature that they were referring to when talking about responsibility and decision making. They highlight that having this trait inherently makes you more trustworthy making decisions. The authors also go on to say that it is not enough to act with respect just for the sake of the company but to actually value it.

I do believe I know what the authors are trying to get at with mentioning this as an important feature. The definition before this statement describes respect and it makes sense why a company would want this in an employee. It is not described as a respect for elders or anything like that but an overall respect for others and anyone that would be affected by your decision making. A person that possesses this trait takes in account for those lives and their needs. This characterizes this worker as someone who takes in account others instead of solely just what would improve the company’s market cap. They go on to say that rationality may only be part of the equation. A rational thinker will think in ways that only helps him/her in a rational way. That means that he/she will be fine with unethical actions as long as they know rationally they will not be caught. This also means that they will not stand up against unethical practices or situations if it could affect them negatively. No rational person would stand up for someone or something if they know it will be costly to them in the future. However, a person with a mix of rationality and respect will stand up to unjust or unethical practices that are harming other people even though they may be harmed.
