1) Was Nintendo just lucky, or does the Wii’s success have strategic merit?
Nintendo’s huge success and revival can hardly be regarded as luck. It is rather a result of a smart strategic step and a discovery of an unoccupied niche in the market. While Nintendo could not compete with state-of-the-art technologies offered by other companies, it focused on turning its customers’ gaming experience into a fun pastime rather than impressing them with cutting-edge technologies. What was it if not a strategically meticulous plan? Nintendo was certainly running a risk of losing everything when they implemented this plan, as there was no guarantee that the customers will like what they wanted to offer. At the same time, they did not rely on luck as the niche called “playing for fun” was unoccupied. They were the first to occupy it, and it was the plan that worked out perfectly well.
2) Has Nintendo put the “fad” question to rest? State a case as to why the Wii is or is not here to stay.
Nintendo has often been the first to invent things. It was one of the pioneers of console video games, it was the first to create the marker and with the launch of the Wii – a brand new type of games that involve motions. Having observed Nintendo’s activities, it is quite easy to say that everything the company has ever done has never been because of “fad” factor. Almost every product offered by Nintendo is here to stay. The Wii is a revolutionary product that has changed the industry and introduced a brand new type of games. The sales rates of the Wii speak for themselves: overall people have bought more Wiis than Xboxs and PS3s altogether. This fact alone testifies that Wii is definitely here to stay. Moreover, it has opened a whole world of new opportunities for similar devices.
3) In which stage of the product cycle is the Wii? Based on that stage, is Nintendo employing good marketing mix strategies?
