Definitions:

• Job evaluation is the process of systematically determining a relative value of jobs in an organization. In all cases the idea is to evaluate the job, not the person doing it.

• A process of determining the relative worth of the various jobs within the organization, so that differential wage may be paid to jobs of different worth. (Wendell L. French).

• The overall activity of involving an orderly, systematic method and procedure of ranking, grading and weighing of jobs to determine the value of a specific job in relation to other jobs.

• An attempt to determine and compare demands which the normal performance of a particular job makes or normal workers, without taking into account the individual abilities or performance of the workers concerned. (International Labor Organization).

• Assessment of the relative worth of varied jobs on the basis of a consistent set of job and personal factors, such as qualifications and skills required.

• The process of analyzing and assessing the content of jobs, in order to place them in an acceptable rank order, which can then be used as a basis for remuneration system. (British Institute of Management – 1970).
