First of all, it was a great speech and also surprised me that Newark city used to have a such big Chinese community. For importantly, as a Chinese student, I was shocked that those Chinese people are able to survival while facing so many difficult. I feel lucky that I don’t have to face the similar situation as they do when I first come to American for study.

Through the talk, we know that the really first group of Chinese “immigrants” are really a group labors. And because of their lack of knowledge and the language barrier, they can only take difficult and low wage jobs. Many of them can’t even feed their family and survival. I talked with Jack Lin (the member of Newark China town who attend the meeting) during the break of the meeting. He told me that he and his friends were hired by a project manager. He took them here and let them build a bridge and building. But after that, the manager left. They got no job and none of them speak English and they have no idea for what to do. Many of them regrets to come to America but they can’t afford to go back China.

And a very interesting thing that I hear about the Newark China Town is the gambling house. Gambling is considered illegal in main land China. Because a gambling house always contains a lot of black money and illegal activities (including drug trade, rob killing and so on). So we often called people who owns gambling house are dangerous with illegal power or in another world ---- Underworld gang.

I heard in the talk that the speaker mentions that there were two families controls the Newark China Town “Chen family” and “An family” (I don’t know if I heard their name right). They both owned a gambling house and against each other for more power. In addition, about twenty or thirty years ago, all most all China Town or Chinses communities in America have at least one gambling house. As I said, gambling house suppose be a “trouble maker”.
