VoIP is simply a method for the delivery of voice communications sessions over internet protocol, and when this is blended with a WLAN (Wi-Fi) network, it be called as VoIP over WLAN or VoWLAN. It is becoming one of the most common and cheap technology to communicate in short as well as long distances. It transmits digitized voice data over IP network, this voice signal is appropriately encoded at one end of the channel, transmitted using IP packets, and then decoded at the receiving end which transformed back into a voice signal. VoWLAN can be conducted over any internet accessible device like a laptop, smartphones, PDA etc. Besides giving almost free calls ability to users, VoIP also provides all the rage applications such as online call logs, conference calling, voicemail, locate-me, call transfer and many others. VoWLAN not only provides generic internal calling for corporations with the ability to roam, but also enable users to use the WLAN’s internet connection to make domestic as well as international calls.

Nowadays VoWLAN is used at both consumer and enterprise level, and is expanding its usage across all domains. However, VoIP over WLAN still faces some Quality of Service (QoS) and security issues, which are anticipated to overcome in the near future owing to its myriad advantages.
