According to AHIMA, PHR is a securely maintained and lifelong health recording of the patients that originates from patients or health care providers (Amatayakul, p.562). Both patients and physicians should retain medical records. Since patients have the ability to update their information, the information stays up to date. Patients can be provide proper education on how to manage the patient’s portal (Amatayakul, p.577). However, some physicians are concerned about the accuracy of the information entered by patients on the portal. Patients should be restricted in deleting and adding certain information while retaining medical records. In addition to that, all the activities must be documented when users enter information (Amatayakul, p.575). This will decrease the chance of information being fraudulent.

Some physicians are against patients having access to all the content due to competitive concern. Patient can share one provider’s information to another without author’s consent (Amatayakul, p.576). On the other hand, patient deserves to have access to original content as well as patient- friendly summary. In this advanced technological era, patient’s education is very important. Consumer empowerment promotes “patient involved in self-management and share decision making” (Amatayakul, p.568). Therefore, patient having access to all the information will increase more awareness in patient health. Many physicians believe that both patients and provider should contribute to PHR because it will allow patients to provide information to providers in very legible and structured manner (Amatayakul, p.575).
