A religious experience can take many different forms, but it would be defined by ‘a non-empirical occurrence that could be perceived as supernatural, this spontaneous mental event may cause change in a person's behaviour and attitudes towards others and or themselves’. However there are many branches of religious experience that are possible to have, one that is extremely common is a vision. The five are intellectual, imaginary and corporeal, these can then be subdivided into either public or private. An intellectual vision brings knowledge and understand such as a revelation from God. An example of an intellectual vision would be when Noah had a series of visions whereby God informed him he needed to restart humanity by building a boat and saving all the animals. By Noah having this vision he gained knowledge so therefore it becomes an intellectual vision where he can help others around him. An example of would be jaccob seeing the ‘ladder to heaven’ in Genesis 28 10-22, this is whereby he saw heaven and became faithful to God. The third vision is corporeal which completely differs to the other two. A corporeal vision is where the figure is externally present and leads them to see something that may happen in the future. This very vivid vision is one that normally defines when the future will entail. A good example of this is St Bernadette’s visions of the Virgin Mary. Public visions is where by multiple people see the actions of what God is...
