Abstract

This paper will discuss the importance of keeping patients’ healthcare information private. We as patients want to always know that our medical and other health information are private and should be protected from unauthorized users, in addition to that, it is of high importance to know that the patient information system is strictly being secured 24/7. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule, a federal law, gives you rights to your health information and sets rules and limits on who can look at and receive your health information ("Health Information Privacy", n.d.). Healthcare employees are required to undergo training to completely have understanding of the HIPPA Law. According to "Importance of HIPPA Compliance Training" (2013), HIPAA training makes sure that all the employees who work with patients and their sensitive information on a daily basis are knowledgeable about the policy of information disclosure. The employees also learn to identify who are those authorized people who can access and use patient information, and who cannot. Through HIPAA training employees can do their best to make sure they are always complying with the rules and regulations laid down by HIPAA.
