Characteristics of orientalism

prejudice and discrimination

A lot of people get Muslims and Arabs confused, the difference between Muslims and Arabs is their religion. Muslims are individuals embracing the religion Islam, hence Muslims are part of a religious sect. Arabs on the other hand are individuals that dwell or own the Arabian or Arab regions. Thus, they form a specific internationally known nationality. They speak the Arabic (Arabian) language and can choose whatever faith or religion they plan to follow. On the other hand, Muslims can have native tongues of almost any language in the world.

The United States policies concerning treatment of Muslims and Arabs have been lacking since 9/11. In an article from the N C T A (National Commision on Terrorist attacks) upon the United States Website, it states that political and economic openness, the extension of greater opportunities to women-these cures must come from within Muslim societies themselves. The United States must support further development to eliminate stereotypes ans discrimination of these people. It seems that the United States is trying not to stereotype, just because of 9/11.

One Characteristic of Orientalism would be, the term Orient, which is a huge geographical region that encompasses various cultures and includes the Asian and Middle Eastern regions. Another Characteristic would be that the Orient is considered to be inferior and backward. Orientalism and prejudice may contribute to hate crimes against these groups; I think it’s mainly because of 9/11. People can’t see the difference in culture and religion, so they automatically pass judgment on them. I think that no matter where you come from, there is always going to be some type of hate crimes. I think that individuals could educate each other to promote tolerance and reduce prejudice in their towns and cities.
