The persuasive essay that I have chosen from chapter 51 is “I See Why Others Choose to Die” written by Jerry Fensterman. This essay was written by a man who has had insight regarding why a person would choose physician-assisted suicide. The essay was extremely powerful in the sense that it talked about a man’s struggle to beat cancer. However, the essay had a strong message I do not think it was very persuasive. The essay seems to be more about a man who lost his fight with cancer. Not until the end of the essay did the author state his point. This essay is also more focused on telling a story rather than persuading a reader. The author did receive great sorrow and sympathy from me, but I was not persuaded. Throughout the essay I was unsure what direction the author was taking. The essay stated that the author was not for physician-assisted suicide, but the final sentence asked the reader to consider another point-of-view. This essay would have been more productive if the author would have stated his point more clearly in the beginning. I also think the author tried to persuade the reader by sharing his story of battling cancer rather than providing more insight to why a person should or should not chose physician-assisted suicide.
