Pixar Animation Studios – “A people-centered business”

I. Introduction

1. Overview

* Pixar Animation Studios (Pixar), is an American computer animation film studio based in Emeryville, California. Pixar is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company.

* It is best known for CGI-animated feature films created with RenderMan and producing 17 feature films. All of them have debuted with CinemaScore ratings of at least "A−," indicating positive receptions with audiences: Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Up, Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur and so on.

* Co-founders: Ed Catmull, Alvy Ray Smith, Steve Jobs.

2. History

* 1979: The Graphics Group of the computer division of Lucasfilm.

+ It was operating in Computer Technology field with a spirit of open innovation.

+ Their core product at this time was PIC (Pixar image computer) that was purchased many by Disney to aid in the development of their animation process from more laborious techniques.

* 1986: Pixar was spun out as a corporation with investment from Steve Jobs.

* 1990s: Pixar sold its hardware division, open up many of their software tools to the market for Macintosh and Windows system. Despite small successes, Pixar was struggling because their losses being so great.

* 1994: Jobs contemplated selling Pixar to another company, most notably Microsoft. However, he decided to give Pixar another chance and the success of “Toy Story” gave Pixar the direction it had needed and Steve Jobs’ decision was right.

* 2006: Pixar was acquired by Disney.

II. PIXAR’S CHARACTERISTICS

1. FAILURES FONDNESS - one of the ways Pixar creates their innovative space unlikely any others.

* At the very beginning, Ed Catmull hired the computer painting talented, Alvy Ray Smith, who he realized to be smarter than him, but he found that OK. This might be dangerous situation for Catmull because he might not able to control his people or their overwhelm performance which might come to a big failure....
