Water treatment by ion exchange is a common unit operation in chemical, petrochemical, oil refining, semiconductor manufacturing, and utility plants. To remove silica, dissolved solids and total organic carbon (TOC) for reduced chemical regeneration usage, waste handling, and maintenance costs.

The main considerations for demineralization operation are operating economics, quality and reliability of resin performance, and minimizing environmental costs. The primary variables in determining the operating economics are costs associated with regeneration, waste neutralization and disposal, as well as, resin replacement and disposal.

In our plant we are using one of an a world leader in both Ion Exchange and Reverse Osmosis technologies Water & Process Solutions which called “DOW RESIN “.

Some general comments can be made about resin lifetime.

* In water treatment the lifetime for anion exchange resins is about 4 to 8 years.

* In water treatment the lifetime for Cation exchange resins is about 10 to 15 years.

When should you replace your resins?

1.The number one reason to replace your resins is because they have been damaged by years . After about 10 years ( can be much sooner, or a bit later ) the resins break down and become so fragmented they start to restrict the water pressure through the resin tank (DP is high). This is generally how you "know" you need new resins. On some systems the fragments ( "Fines" ) will start coming into the system.

2.Water quality which comes out from resin became low and cannot be improved.

3.When the resin bed has become contaminated by a noticeable and usually visible amount of algae growth ( This problem is common in tanks installed outside ).
