Theories & Changes involved in Equal Opportunities in Selection Interview

The Employment Equality (Age) Regulations from1 October 2006 makes it unlawful to discriminate against employees, those looking for work and trainees based on the grounds of age.

This regulation covers workers of all ages, both young and old and for all employment and those on vocational training.

In effect we need to look at the way we recruit and retain staff and check on a regular basis that any policies, practices or certain routines we have adopted are of age compliance.

In the US, The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the first federal law designed to protect most employees from employment discrimination based on an applicant’s race, colour, religion, sex or ethnic origin.

More recent statutes have listed other traits such as the following as the ‘protected classes’ Acts, to incorporate for an Equal Opportunity in Selection Interview, where it can be introduced in firms or organisations. They are:

The Age Discrimination Act

The Disability Act of 1990

An area we can concentrate on to ensure it involves Equal Opportunity could be Recruitment & Selection Procedures.

We have identified 8 areas within the Recruitment & Selection Procedures to be focused on, where we think creates an Equal Opportunity within an organisation through Selection Interview Process. These are:

Advertising

Vacancies should be advertised both internally and externally. Where post is advertised externally, reasonable care should be taken to avoid unfair restrictions to applicants.

Job Requirements

Job descriptions and Person Specifications should be despatched with all application forms.

References to specific qualifications should be included only to where it’s relevant to the job.

Unless they are justifiably a material factor in the selection process, Age restrictions should be avoided.
