*MOTIVATION comes from the word “MOVERE” which means “TO MOVE”, according to Nelson and Quick.

*MOTIVATION

Process of Arousing and Sustaining Goal-Directed Behavior– Requires understanding the individual, the job and the work, environment and how each of these elements interact. People are Human Beings and as such have Feelings, Beliefs and Values.

Ways to Motivate Individuals

1. Allow individuals to express his thoughts, ideas and feelings,

2. Establish SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Result Overhead and Time Bound,

3. Treat Individuals with Dignity and Respect,

4. Create a Positive Working Climate,

5. Give Rewards,

6. Continuous Communications, and

7. Allows individuals to be what they are capable of doing.

Eight (8) Levels of need priority:

1. Physiological: hunger, thirst, bodily comforts, etc;

2. Safety security: out of danger;

3. Belongingness and Love: affiliate with others, be accepted; and

4. Esteem: to achieve, be competent, gain approval and recognition

5. Cognitive: to know, to understand, and explore;

6. Aesthetic: symmetry, order and beauty;

7. Self-actualization: to find self-fulfillment and realize one’s potential; and

8. Self-transcendence: to connect to something beyond the ego or to help others find self-fulfillment and realize their potential.

*In the Herzberg Study, six (6) motivational factors were included. They were: Achievements, Recognition, Advancement, Work Itself, Possibility of Growth and Responsibility.
