Life is a journey full of decisions and choices. Some decisions are easily made based on routine or passed experiences. However, often time’s decisions need to be taken in which the choices available cross in and out between ethical and moral standards an individual lives by. It is important to understand the difference between morals and ethics in order to identify how such values guide an individual’s actions in life. This paper will examine the differences between ethical and moral issues, the differences between personal and business ethics, and finally will look at common ethical and moral problems found in business.

Ethical issues are considered those by which a group of individuals guide certain actions or behaviors. These behaviors are set by each person’s moral values and behaviors are deemed either acceptable or unacceptable within this particular group of individuals, the standard or code by which they make decisions is directly related to the group’s consensus. Moral values on the other hand depict personal character and all though people can have their own set of values which are considered their morals many times they make decisions based on ethical expectations.

An example of a person having a moral and ethical dilemma can be found in the case of a defense attorney. According to R. Kayne “a defense attorney’s moral values may find murder immoral and reprehensible, however ethic’s demand that they defend their client vigorously even when knowing the person is guilty” (Conjecture Corporation, 2011.) If a defense attorney exercised personal moral values when defending a client they would find it difficult to look past their ethical responsibility. This ethical responsibility requires a defense attorney to uphold a legal system in which the prosecuting attorney would have to proof guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
