After learning about the Iraq War and the Vietnam War, I have realized the ironic similarities of these two events. The circumstances, conduct and reaction to these two wars are extremely close in detail.

It is very ironic how both of these wars began. The main reason that the United States took action in Vietnam was because of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which was when a group of Vietnam ships attacked the destroyer USS Maddox. This event allowed President Lyndon Johnson to assist any south east Asian countries who were against the communist movement. This is how their involvement in Vietnam escalated, however it is under deep suspicion that Lyndon Johnson had set the Gulf of Tonkin incident up, to create a reason for fighting the communists in Vietnam. The cause of the war of Iraq has a very similar storyline to this one. It all started when 9/11 occurred which was when two planes flew into the twin tours. The who world was shocked and devastated at this catastrophe, obviously causing the United States people and government to get revenge. As time went by, the United States reasons for inflicting war had changed. Apparently, they were also there because they were positive that Iraq was holding large nuclear weapons. However, you’d think that the United States with all of their technology and power would have found them by now.

The conduct and length of both of these wars is also very similar. Both wars were fought guerilla style, for that is the only way that the oppositions had against such a powerful army like the United States. The Vietnam war lasted sixteen years and the Iraq war has currently been fought for eight years now. However, who knows how much longer this war will continue? Both wars seemed to be fought for an unnecessary amount of time for a purpose that nobody is quite sure of. It is also very interesting how both of these wars were handed over to another president.
