Electronic commerce, also referred to as e-business, is the process of doing business on the Internet. The days of businesses utilizing the Internet for the sole purpose of buying or selling goods and services is a thing of the past. Today, businesses as well as individuals use the Internet to service customers and collaborate with business partners. E-business has become an important tool that allows anyone doing business on the Internet to compete and survive. The ability to communicate in real time has turned out to be a significant tool for economic survival for many businesses in the world. The world has become smaller and business competition has grown noticeably larger on a global scale. A fundamentally established e-business strategy is imperative in order for an organization to compete internationally as a major player on the big stage. An e-business strategy has to be economically attractive to the existing progression of the overall organizational goals. The strategy should also be created with the ability to adjust to the expected improvements of technology.

An organization must develop and observe an understanding of the significance of strategy to facilitate the development of a sound e-business strategy. The organization should also understand why a supply chain as well as a value added supply chain must be developed. Finally, an analysis must be performed to compare and contrast business to consumer (B2C) and business to business (B2B) supply chains. An organization’s ability to understand what it takes to develop a strategy to address the key concerns of a traditional and value added supply chain as well as the differences between the B2C and B2B supply chains will be the key to the organization’s continued success.
