Policy 1

The modern system of workers' compensation is so complex and confusing; it produces considerable grief to those who must deal with compensation benefits on a daily basis. Yet these often cumbersome regulations are so ultimately vital to the overall success in businesses and the recruitment of talent.

“A distinction between law and ethics is that legal mandates are usually more precise. The law requires individuals and organizations to behave in a specified way, requiring or prohibiting certain acts” (chapter 2, pg. 20). Coming from a large Property Management company and now working for a start up, I have the ability to create a policy manual that will ultimately affect all those who will work for Advent Properties Inc, now and in the future. With a policy manual, staff and associates will know what is expected from them and the ethics in which the company stands. In Property Management or for that matter any company, a well thought out policy is a must. This leaves no “gray” area to mislead or misrepresent employees.

Why is a piece of paper such an integral part to a successful company's ethics in day to day business? My hopes within my own company are to give everyone a solid understanding of the company's mission and goals. This helps with everything from the use of company phones, email procedures, dress attire, compensation and other important matters. A good policy manual establishes trust between a “traditional” or rational organization and the employees this system represents.

I believe that not having a written policy is neither ethical nor smart. Not having a successful policy manual is one of the biggest mistakes a young startup company can make.
