Selection and Evaluation of First-Line Supervisors or Managers

The following paper concentrates on management skills and the managers’ most important characteristics that are essential for the success to the given organization. I have held interviews with four different companies’ managers to find out how they select and evaluate their first line managers or supervisors, and what the main characteristics are that they require for such position. The companies that I have interviewed are: Medtronic MiniMed Inc., Act One, Ralphs, and Farmers Insurance. The following questions were given to the hiring managers:

1) How does your company selects first-line supervisor or manager?

2) What are the criteria?

3) How much time does it take?

4) How does your company evaluate first-line supervisors or managers?

5) What documentation do you require for particular position?

Farmers Group, Inc. owned by Zurich Financial Services, who conducts business in North America and Europe as well as in Asia Pacific, Latin America and other markets. Farmers Insurance is the nation’s third-largest “personal Lines Property and Casualty insurance” group with nearly 80 years of experience. Throughout the life of the business the demand for different kinds of insurance has increased causing the company to grow bigger and profitable every day. Today, Farmers Insurance has 14000 agents nationwide and it is 21 billion dollar company. District 56 in Sherman Oaks, CA has 50 fulltime agents, 10 career agents, 15 reserve agents and 4 managers (District manager, Reserve District Manager, District Trainer, Life insurance specialist whose duties are helping agents to process new life policies)....
