So you want to be a preacha!

Preaching is = a proclamation of divine truth with the express purpose of causing a change in a person’s behavior

# 1 goal in preaching is to persuade

I. Art of persuasion

• It is believed that there are 3 ways in which one could persuade with rhetoric (words)

1. Ethos = character – we the listener believe good men more fully and readily than others

• There are three things that inspire confidence to believe the speaker

• Credibility is the key in public speaking; credibility is gained through good character!!

2. Pathos = emotions of the audience

• Persuasion may come through the hearers when the speech stirs their emotions.

• People do what they do out of emotions. If the audience is not emotionally connected, seldom will they ever really be persuaded

o Note: some people may not be emotionally ready! (parable: good seed bad seed)

• Setting the right emotions is helped by worship, illustration, drama video….ect.

3. Logos = the word (its where we get logic)

• Persuasion is affected by the speech itself when we have proved a truth

• Persuasion occurs with good reasoning or good proof, but both are best!!

Summary: A good speaker is someone of good character, in touch with the audience and able to effectively communicate biblical truth to produce change in listener! (
