Education is one of the most serious issues in the United States. With the U.S being so diverse, this nation is yet to see a comprehensive educational policy that will give every student an equal opportunity in education. A point of accountability and improving student learning in the Bush/Brogan A Plus Plan is to close the education gap. But what exactly is the education gap? The education gap is referred to as a gap in education that persists between minority and disadvantage students and their Caucasian counterparts. Many well off Caucasian kids attend better funded schools that encourage them to graduated high school, graduate college, and obtain good paying jobs. While minorities, including African Americans and Hispanics attend bad schools that may hold them back. The National Assessment of Education (NAEP) measures the gap of achievement in the subject areas of math, reading, writing, and science. Data from the NAEP has been stated “By the time minorities reach the 12th grade they are four years behind their counterparts.” Also stated in the NAEP report, “17 year-old African American and Latino students have skills in English, mathematics and science similar to those of 13-year-old white students.” (2009)

Steps that are being made to improve the education gap are starting with early childhood care. Younger children before had little or no exposure to age appropriate learning activities and by providing preschool programs students will social and thinking skills as well as language ability. College programs are also being implemented to shape students academic abilities, such programs include Upward Bound and Liberty Partnership programs. (2009).

Public school students in the state of Florida must take the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in order to determine their standings with other students in the same grade or age group.
