Suntory

Introduction

Suntory was founded by Shinjiro Torii in 1899 in Osaka Japan. He called this establishment “Torii Shoten”, where he began to manufacture and sell grape wine. Ever since, Suntory has been a company that takes up new challenges and strives for a mutually beneficial relationship with society. For example, in 1923, Suntory was the first manufacturer to make domestic whiskey, which perfectly accepted by Japanese people, culture and environment. Suntory’s whiskey was exported for the first time to overseas market. In 1930, Suntory joined the beer business at the time when people said that the market is saturated and there is no more capacity for new beer entrants. However, Suntory accomplished another impossible and succeeded its business. Later, Suntory moved into soft drinks and foodstuffs, followed by globalization of the company’s business. According to its chairman of the board, Nobutada Saji, Suntory’s mission has been to “offer high-quality whiskeys, beers, soft drinks, water, Chinese tea and other products to enrich our customers’ daily lives. Our motto, “Yette Minahare—Go for it!”, expresses our willingness to constantly challenge ourselves to increase the value and range of our liquor and food products and to continue to grow our company.” Suntory’s corporate history shows how its motto has passed through everything and overcome the challenges.

Suntory Holdings Limited operates more than 160 companies in 15 different countries encompassing wine, beer, water, Chinese Oolong tea and other diversified products. Suntory Ltd. is one of the World’s leading wine and spirits companies and was the first company to introduce western-style spirits to Japan. Suntory exports a wide range of spirits and liqueurs distilled in Japan to about 40 countries, including authentic Japanese whiskies, shochu, a native Japanese spirit and unique liqueurs such as Midori and ZEN.
