Many organizations now have a members’ Web site, where customers can keep track of different kinds of information related to the organization, such as Wish Lists or My Favorites. Visit a site that offers this type of service: eBay, Amazon, Dell, and Old Navy are some examples. What types of information does the site collect? How does the business use this information? What kind of competitive advantage, if any, does the business gain in collecting this information?

I have an Amazon account and it collects information from my wish list to determine which items would best suit me, it gives me a list of recommendations every time I log in, and allows me to view them and the comments. I love buying books; about 95% of my wish list on Amazon is a list of books. I have actually bought books that Amazon has recommended based on the books I have already purchased and from the ones that are currently on my wish list. To me it gives more business because it catches the interest of the buyer. A wish list or favorites list also benefits them because you can make your list public and it will allow your friends and family to view your list and actually purchase items off of your list for any occasion. To me this is very beneficial because you currently don’t have the funds to purchase from their website it can attract others to buy them for you. I think just the fact that Amazon sells such a wide verity of items it attracts many consumers.
