Introduction
In the engineering industry many different types of materials have different properties and these properties can be altered by different process, examples can be Cold Working and Annealing.
Cold Working is the process of altering the shape and size of a metal by plastic deformation, there are many types of process, examples of these are rolling, pressing, extruding, etc.
This process is carried out below the crystallisation point, which is usually at room temperature. When the metal is in this process the hardness and tensile strength increases whilst ductility and impact values decrease.
Annealing is the process of heat treatment applied to Cold Worked metal, this cause changes in properties such as strength and hardness. In the process the metal is heated to above the crystallisation temperature, after a certain time maintaining at a suitable temperature the metal is then cooled slowly.
When the process of Annealing is carried out on the metal it helps to relieve internal stresses and increase the softness, ductility and toughness.
