Learning Team Charter Analysis

Communication is about conveying thoughts, opinions, and ideas to another person or group. Good communication skills can help individuals to take charge of new or stressful situations confidently. If an individual can express him or herself well, most people are more likely to listen to whatever he or she has to say. The ability to communicate is extremely useful in influencing, negotiating, and compromising in important personal or business matters. Communication skills are also used as an excellent tool for resolving conflict and dealing with difficult people.

However, when it comes to groups, not all communication is good communication; it is not enough for groups to sit there and just talk. Positive communication exists when there are effective communication skills among all members. This would mean that the individuals of the group know how to speak and listen to one another in ways that generate results. Without group communication there is confusion, misunderstandings, and unhappy members. A group that does not communicate well will struggle to accomplish any of their goals.

Group Communication, Differences, and Strategies

With group communication all members of a group can communicate to each other verbally and nonverbally. Messages or opinions are transmitted and received within a group of three individuals or more. It allows the opportunity to share thoughts and ideas that would motivate another member of the group to produce a result. “Successful groups listen carefully to each other and respond to emotions as well as words. Less successful groups pay less attention to what is said and how it is said” (Locker & Kienzler, 2008, p. 464). It is important that all members of the group strive to create an environment in which all can freely communicate for the best interest of the group.
