Meeting with you yesterday was very eye-opening! My previous research into Software Piracy attitudes at CWU indicated that students knew the legal restrictions and were obeying those laws. The personal instances you related to me about roommates and classmates continuing to pirate software makes me wonder if the ITS Department is doing all it can to stem software piracy at CWU.

To follow up on our conversation yesterday, I would like you to implement the survey instrument you showed me. As we discussed, I think 100 completed student surveys will give us an idea on whether students, first, are aware of Software Piracy laws, and second, if they are obeying those laws.

The overall question we need to answer is: Does CWU need to implement Software Piracy Training? To answer this question, I think you need to investigate: (1) What is the current knowledge of CWU students of Software Piracy? (2) Are CWU students following Software Piracy Laws (your idea of giving students specific situations on the survey to answer concerning software piracy will help answer this question)? And (3) What do experts outside the CWU community say about Software Piracy?

Providing the data to answer these three questions should allow you to make your overall recommendation - Does CWU need to implement Software Piracy Training.

If your final recommendation is to implement training, please provide me with 2-4 ideas on how this implementation could happen. What type of specific training would you recommend?

If your final recommendation is to not implement training, please provide me with 2-4 ideas on how we can communicate better to students the laws surrounding Software Piracy.

As this topic is important to CWU, I am eager to read your report. Please have it to me prior to Tuesday, December 2.
