Management and leadership in organizational culture
The terms managing and leading are often used interchangeably. However, managers and leaders have different roles and responsibilities in an organization. Managers plan, organize, lead, and control resources to achieve goals efficiently. Leaders use a variety of behaviors and strategies to motivate, inspire, adapt, and change. They both create and maintain a healthy organizational structure, but in different ways.
Managers work with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals. Good managers achieve the organization’s goals and make the best use of its resources. Organizational resources include people, time, money, and materials. Managers use the four fundamental management principles. These are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (Bateman & Snell, 2009, para. 53-55).
Managers use the four fundamental principles to create and maintain a healthy organizational structure. Managers use planning to design their organizational structure. They identify business functions such as human resources or Finance and establish departments and reporting relationships to administer them. Managers then organize to assemble and coordinate the human, physical, financial, and other resources into the organizational plan. The traditional management role of leading describes the process of motivating and communicating with employees so that they will achieve the organizational goals. Managers use controlling to monitor performance and progress toward goals. They then make any necessary changes to align outcomes with the goals of the organization (Bateman & Snell, 2009, para. 58-65).
