First part : Before the electronic entertainment age

Few people know that, Nintendo is a hundred years old company, even more, since it was founded in 1889 by Fusaijiro Yamauchi. Based in Kyoto in Japan, this small familial business produced handmade Hanafudas. They are used to play many traditional Japanese games, but also used for Casino playing cards game similar to black jack. Nintendo’s Hanafudas became quickly the most popular cards in Kyoto.

However, during 60’s Hiroshi Yamauchi, the former president knows that Nintendo must diversified its products. Therefore, he tried to set up a taxi company, then a love hotel chain, a food company. But all of these ventures eventually failed.

SO he decided to come back to basics of Nintendo : Entertainment. Nintendo moved into the Japanese toy industry. Hiroshi had the luck and skill to employ two bright innovators. The first one was Gunpei Yokoi who created numerous toys and electronic game for kids before Nintendo come into video games industry, with the Game&Watch invented by Gunpei Yokoi. And finally, the second innovators was Shigeru Miyamoto who created MARIO!

Since this moment, Nintendo became Leader !

Second part : A famous character : SUPER MARIO

The first apparition of Mario is in an Arcade Game called Donkey Kong, in 1981. HE wasn’t made to become famous, he didn’t have a name yet. But because gamers interacted with this character to rescue a princess called “Pauline” who had been kidnapped by the nasty Donkey Kong, he was most appreciate than Donkey Kong. People called him “Jumpman” since he had to jump over barrels to reach the princess.

Thanks to the success of this game and “Jumpman”, Shigeru Miyamoto decided to develop games with Jumpman as hero, named Mario.

But how to recognize Mario and why is he design like that ?
