As more and more workers are increasing the number of hours spent working and commuting to jobs, workers are looking for ways to help relieve the stress of not having enough hours in the day. The stress put on employees due to this situation can dramatically decrease the amount of productivity that employee holds. Employers are constantly looking for ways to increase the productivity of their employees. Many employers are turning to work-life balance programs that will help not only individual employees, but these programs can also benefit the organization. This paper will take a look at the effect of work-life balance and the functions of Human Resource Management. I will look at many of the functions but two of the most important functions that are affected by work-life balance are recruitment and selection, and employee benefits. The reason that I choose to research on this topic was to better my understanding of work-life balance programs and prepare myself for reentering the workforce as a working parent.

Work-life balance is crucial to the function of any organization to prevent employees from experiencing burnout, lowered productivity, dissatisfaction, and stress-related illnesses. Creating work-life balance programs give employees the opportunity to find a positive relationship between commute time, workplace time, and home time. According to the CEO of worklifebalance.com, Jim Bird, “Work-life balance is meaningful achievement and enjoyment in everyday life.” Contrary to the myth that work-life balance is strictly set up to benefit the employee, work-life balance programs have many benefits for the organization as well.

Another reason that work-life balance programs are becoming increasingly popular with employees is the amount of time that they are spending on the job.
