Emotional thinking is the opposite of rational thinking. Emotional thinking requires one to use the basic thought patterns and makes a decision based on previous knowledge, usually clearly, and specifically. This type of thinking is not based on obtaining all the facts, nor does it require one to use much thought. This type of thinking is a reaction type of thinking.

According to science, emotional thinking comes from the limbic system of the brain, within the frontal lobes. Emotional thinking is closely related to stress so the limbic system goes into overdrive firing neurons before the thinking part of the brain shuts down. However, when healthy people decide to snap out of sadness and depression the thinking part of the brain begins to fights back (Kirby and Goodpaster, 2007).

An example of an emotional thinking decision is one where the decision is made based on what is the fact at the moment. A Medical equipment supplier has not received a payment from a client in three months. The fourth quarter profits were down, management wants to know why, and who should be blamed for this oversight. When the Accounts Receivable clerk brings the arrears to the attention of the manager, he immediately decides to cut off the Hospital from further purchases until the arrears are brought current.

Emotional thinking is done by one using their instinct from those experiences rather than knowledge and values systems.
