Assessment of the Character, Celie Johnson

The assessment of Celie Johnson would begin with identifying the chore strengths the character possesses. These strengths are areas the human service worker can draw upon to fulfill the needs identified during the intake process. An area of strength apparent in Celie is her ability to learn as demonstrated by how quickly she learned to read and spell the names of household items her sister taught her. This ability to learn is also apparent in her continued efforts to read the book her sister left for her even after they were separated. Another area of strength for Celie is perseverance. This is demonstrated by her ability to undergo the hardships of her life without complaining. It is also demonstrated by the patience she has while waiting on a letter to come from her sister. Despite the fact that her husband tells her there is no mail for her, she never gives hope and asks each time the mail is delivered.

The barriers to treatment that Celie could face could be her inability to trust as she has never been given a reason to trust another human being. The only person in her life that Celie believed truly loved her was her sister who was torn from her by her husband. Another barrier Celie might encounter in treatment could be her submissiveness. This would make it hard for a human service worker to determine if she is expressing how she truly feels or just saying what she feels the human service worker wants to hear. This would make it very difficult for a male counselor to build a rapport with her. Celie might be fearful of a male as all the men in her life have been abusive and domineering towards her. This attitude is obvious when she instructs her step-son, Harpo, to beat his wife when he asks her for advice on how to deal with her.
