Death of a Salesman was written by Arthur Miller in an American playwright in 1949. This play had 742 performances. The drama contains guilt, punishment and authority. The play is a drama of tragedy and pathos. The play contains several elements of drama, including plot, characters, setting, theme, and tone. This play deals with hopes and dreams that have gone wrong.

The plot is about the main character that has emptiness about his life and wants to fix it. The setting is mostly taken place in Brooklyn in the Loman’s house. The main theme throughout the play is that the family cannot make a distinction between reality and illusion. This is the main conflict throughout the play. Throughout the play, Willy also exhibits skills that would be more suited to an outside life but he does not see these skills, primarily his ability to build and repair the house, as useful. The only success he can accept is the materialistic success of the ‘American dream’, which is beyond him. (Wikipedia) The play is mostly told from Willy’s point of view. The Loman household and characters were based on Miller’s uncle and his family.

Willy Loman is the main character in the play. He is a middle-aged salesman, who can barely pay for the bills, since he got demoted and only gets a small commission pay every week. He was a hardworking man doing what he could to make a living. His character spends more time dreaming that acting. He struggles with the fact that he missed the opportunity to be rich. He struggles with the fact that he may have missed his opportunity to be rich. Willy was abandoned by his own father when he was three. He feels like he failed as a father since he did not have that growing up and he was unsure how to teach his children values and to be successful. Willy had a rich brother, Ben, who died. Willy looked up to Ben because he was successful and wealthy.
