Economic Accountability

Preamble

The next president of the United States must work to achieve the four goals of economics: efficiency, equity, stability, and growth. Efficiency or an economy that produces the products people want at the least cost can be achieved through the continued strength of antitrust laws to retain a competitive market. Efficiency can also be achieved if national defense spending is cut in order to eliminate programs which are not vital to our sovereignty and safety. In order to achieve equity we must work to strengthen education, social security, and environmental programs. Stability can be achieved through accountable fiscal policy, a responsible national health care plan, and ultimately the continual growth of our economy. Growth can be achieved through the creation of new jobs, incentives to not outsource, research and development, and trade. If the next president works to strengthen the economy rather than political image the United States will be stronger for both business and life.

Anti-Trust Laws

In order to strengthen our capitalist society the United States must continue to enforce anti-trust laws. Monopolies decrease competition thus raising the price for certain products. Without monopolies the economy is more efficient. When there is a monopoly, consumer surplus, or the difference between the amount a person is willing to pay and the market price is less than the producer surplus or profit. This leads to an inefficient mix of outputs. A more efficient economy leads to a better utilization of our resources and a stronger economy.

National Defense and Iraq

Both Kerry and Bush believe that troops should remain in Iraq until business is finished. I disagree with this policy. We should have never entered Iraq in the first place. The occupation and invasion of Iraq is an astronomical waste of money and lives. Furthermore, Iraq is an inefficient use of government funds....
