An Evaluation of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ)

I. Introduction

Testing in society has always been very controversial. From the Bell Curve debate where experts argue over the validity of testing intelligence, to the testing of elderly drivers to simple scoliosis screenings in grade school, there is something uncomfortable about the idea of a test. Of course, for those who do well, testing can bring great rewards, but the validity of any given test is of the utmost concern to administrators. While certain tests are fairly accurate, and some even beyond reproach, in respect to testing certain facts, there are some that are somewhat ambiguous.

The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) is a test that looks for leadership ability and it is one that is accepted by a variety of institutions. However, it is important to keep in mind that leadership is “a mature field” (Hunt 2000, p.435). It is something that possesses bodies of theory that is widely accepted. At the same time, there are disputes between various theoretical camps. The MLQ however is a test that is widely used today, but just because it is used a great deal of the time, does not mean it is perfect. The test has flaws. Still, it is something that is relevant in the postmodern world where management is seen as key and testing is necessary to place individuals, particularly in large institutions.

II. Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ)

The MLQ test is designed to measure leadership ability, attitudes and goals. According to the organization that distributes the test, a description of it is as follows: The test is a “short but comprehensive survey of 45 items which measures a full range of leadership styles” (“About the” 2003).
