Introduction

The issue of freshwater pollution has reached a serious level of concern. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has projected that water pollution will be as high in 2025 as it was in 1968, before the passage of the Clean Water Act. In order to combat this pollution, we must comprehend the problems and become part of the resolution. With the various types of water pollution, the quality and quantity of our clean freshwater recourses are depleting. This water pollution problem is not just a local issue but rather a global problem that requires serious attention in order for clean up of these contaminants to be successful. According to an article at PollutionIssues.com (2007), “The UN reports that one person in six lives without regular access to safe drinking water”. There are essential changes that are needed, but they will not come easily. We must remember that water is the lifeblood of the world and is essential to the survival of all living things. We must do everything possible to maintain the quality of clean water.

Action Items

There are various categories of water pollution that affect the world today. Although we recognize this reality, humans still ignore this problem by polluting the rivers and lakes. The main contributors of water pollution are classified as municipal, industrial, and agricultural. By providing a step-by-step “Freshwater Sustainability Plan”, this pollution issue can be maintained and even possibly solved. The following is an action plan that will lay out the blueprint needed to ensure this sustainability plan succeeds.

Step one of the sustainability plan is to research the freshwater pollution problem and identify the source of the water pollutants.
