Introduction

In the modern era it has become an increasing concern for persons to keep their data secure. In the earlier days paper files would be maintained which would be kept safely in safes and secret hiding places; but today times have changed and the increased reach of personal computers made it easy to keep files together and save on space. But with advancement always comes tragedy; over the years more and more viruses and hacking cases have thrown light on security problems with computers. This is the same for businesses. Depending on the sensitivity of the files different methods and software’s have been introduced for the purpose of protecting data.

Data protection has not always been around though. Computer or computer systems are said to have started around 2000 years ago with the first system a manual one named the Abacus; this was a wooden rack which held beads which were strung on. According to Joshi (2006); Blaise Pascal was given credit to having build a prototype of a digital computer in 1642. This was used to add numbers together. Leibniz added to Pascal’s creation by introducing multiplication into it. But for many centuries these creations were considered “weird”.
