Amazon.com is an online retailer which operates in North America and internationally. It has over 20 product categories which serve customers through its retail websites and focuses on selection, price, and convenience. [It also offers programs that enable seller customers to sell their products. Amazon.com was founded in 1994 and is headquartered in Seattle, Washington] (yahoo.com, 2011) and [its revenues reached close to 31 Billion Dollars last year] (yahoo.com, 2011).

An area where Amazon.com competes with Google and Microsoft is in the search engine market. Amazon.com created A9.com in 2003 with the belief that search is important to e-commerce. [Amazon.com’s A9 provides a unique product that provides a more personalized search experience. For example, it allows users to create a history of their Web searches and manage the information they find] (A9.com / Amazon.com, 2003-2010).

Another interesting battle is brewing between Amazon.com vs Google which will provide eBooks in North America. Last December, Google announced that eBookstore will launch. Currently, Amazon.com is the official online bookstore for kindle and is convenient and customized in my opinion. The only winners in this battle will be the consumers. Google, with its unlimited resources will have a chance of revolutionizing eBooks while Amazon.com can continue their successful run for kindle.

Amazon.com and Microsoft also compete in operating systems which allow developers to deploy web-based services around Visual Studio quickly and easily without having to worry about the infrastructure costs or overhead that are typically associated with application delivery. [Amazon EC2 provides the flexibility to choose from a number of different instance types to meet your computing needs] (Amazon.com, 2010). [The Microsoft Windows Azure platform is a flexible cloud computing platform that lets you focus on solving business problems and addressing customer needs] (Microsoft, 2011).
