Alumina Business Regulation

Alumina Inc. is a United States based company that operates in eight different countries around the world. It falls under the jurisdiction of region 6 of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Their business interest is in the field of production and manufacturing of automotive components and packaging materials such as bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting.

On March 24, 1989, shortly after midnight one of the largest spills in the United States released eleven gallons of oil in the ocean. The whole ecosystem was wiped out and Alumina did not have an effective system in place to deal with this type of disaster. In our society today, the challenge of managing oil spills in the United States is increasing in complexity and importance. Five years ago, Alumina was reported to be in violation in the routine EPA compliance evaluation inspection. Even though this was Alumina first incident they were fined heavily. Given that this was the first incident a growing pubic awareness and concern for controlling water pollution led to enactment of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendment. When this Act was established it gave the EPA the authority to implement pollution control. The Clean Water Act also set water quality standards. In order for Alumina to increase the level of accountability and responsibility, Alumina needed to examine all of the systems and policies they had in place. The EPA ordered Alumina to clean up the spill and Alumina complied with the order. Since Alumina acted in accordance with the audits on reported violations, they were able to enjoy the overall environmental regulation compliance.
