How Personal Can Ethics Get?

The personal differences and preferences can impact organizational ethics in many aspects of a company. As defined, Ethics refers to the study of moral values, principles, and rules, including the determination of standards of conduct and obligations for individuals and organizations (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p.34 ).In this case study, the personal differences between Lionel Waters and Valerie Young reflects on the organization being successful meaning Valerie’s goals, and aspirations are to make a difference for the company monterarily and competitively. Whereas Water’ goals are to enhance a successful self not a successful company. According to Lawrence Kohlberg’s stages of moral development, he contended that what defines a person’s stage of moral development is not the specific ethical choice, but the person’s ethical reasoning used to justify that choice (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011). That statement provide evident that Valerie’s ethical choices for the company have a valuable reasoning of success and Waters’ intentions are not ethical choices for the company, but his reasoning is for self wealth.

The organizational policies and procedures can impact ethics within a company by creating boundaries in which individuals must conduct business personally and professionally to protect all concerned parties.As Waters has demonstrated not to follow company policy, by concentrating on his own personal gains is why many companies issue policies, which outline the rules and regulations to abide by for the effective functioning of the entire organization and they should be followed even when it requires some self-sacrifices (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011,p.10). For example, most companies in the world provides their employees with an employee handbook that explains the Dos and Do Nots of a company and the company’s goal or mission.
