Discuss the corporate culture at Southwest Airlines and how it leverages the culture to achieve a competitive advantage.

The corporate culture at Southwest Airlines is core value, which transcend the work environment encompass employee respect, management-employee relations and communication efforts, and compensation benefits. Ginger Hardage, Southwest Airlines communications senior vice president indicated the success of the company’s corporate culture is the employees (BCLC.com). Southwest Airlines hire employees complementing the organization’s beliefs, structure, and positive customer relations. Employees reflect the company’s culture by demonstrating the company’s values with the customers- with respect and dignity as a part of the Southwest family.

Positive managerial-employee relationships build character and employee commitment within Southwest Airlines. Corporate staff expect managers to spend time working with and beside the employees to conduct observations, and ensuring employees accomplish company and customer demand. Approachable managers and executives enforced the open-door policy for employees to exercise their rights, and provided recommendations and suggestions to improve employee performance and employee relations.

Employee compensation affects an employee’s behavior, whether positive or negative. The employees are the highest paid employees in the airline industry (McCombs.uyexas.edu). Executive staff does not receive raise increases. Executive staff agreed to ensure employees receive raise increases, especially during the economic downturn. Senior employees receive the opportunity to invest into the organization’s profit-sharing plans with stock option programs, and a profitable retirement package.
