Copyright Implications

When talking about implications of copyrights on the usage of content on a Web site, crimes could be possibly committed. To put it simple, if any materials, such as graphics or text, were not created or written by you personally, then permission would need to be obtained from the owner of the Web site before it could be used. The World Wide Web may be a pretty wild place, but there are a lot of laws surrounding how a site is designed. Some of the laws, like copyright, are globally enforced, and others, like privacy laws, are different from country to country. Taking someone else’s work and using it without permission is stealing; and with stealing, comes consequences.
“Copyright is the right of the owner to reproduce or permit someone else to reproduce copyrighted works” (Kyrnin). Copyright infringement, a breach of law, can include graphics, pictures, plays, music, movies, articles, computer programs, architecture blueprints, sound recordings, and song lyrics. If a site does not have a copyright notice on it, this does not mean someone can use anything on that site without the owner’s permission; whether there is a copyright notice or not, they are protected by the copyright laws.
A web designer should always protect themselves from future lawsuits by obtaining permission before using anything that they do not create themselves. One can obtain permission by sending an e-mail to the webmaster for permission. Supply the webmaster with a detailed explanation of why you want to use their material as well as exactly that material you want to use. One should not download or use anything until permission is granted. A great way to protect the material is by having a copyright notice on the site pages. For images, watermarks and other copyright information should be added into the image itself. It is also always a great idea to include the copyright in the alt text.
