Management and Leadership
Differentiating between managing and leading is not necessarily an easy observation to most managers as it would be to outside observers such as peers and employees. In managerial positions, successfully performing required responsibilities does not make one a great leader, but going beyond requirements and expectations does. Many companies have global initiatives and often face challenges in trying to achieve a sustainable future. When a manager accelerates successful solutions during such challenges, the vision emerges. Managers who are effective are not all true leaders, but the managers who are able to lead effectively set the average managers apart from the excellent ones (Bateman & Snell, 2009).
An average manager must deal with everyday situations in an organization such as planning and budgeting routines. Although managers and leaders can be all in the same, leadership requires one to have the vision to effectively orchestrate change (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Managers have to structure the company by staffing it with people capable people and monitoring their activities; leadership go steps further by inspiring the employees to attain the vision by keeping them focused through motivation to obtain the goals of the company. Management and leadership are both important; the need for more leadership does not minimize the importance of management.
Two types of leadership are supervisory leadership and strategic leadership. Supervisory leadership is the type of behavior expressed by management that provides the guidance, support, and corrective action that is needed in the organization for everyday activities. Strategic leadership has more purpose and meaning to organizations. It involves working with others to envision and initiate changes that will create a future.
